2D View Warning Messages

What do they mean?

Currently, Design Intuition will indicate three different warnings. Here are the explanations behind the warnings:

WARNING: grid is incomplete

grid is incomplete

INTERPRETATION: Design Intuition isn't drawing all the grid lines.

I see this error all the time. Should I be concerned?

No. This is more of an "honesty in reporting" message than a problem. Since not all the grid lines are showing, you might misinterpret what you see. This warning is very common.

WARNING: precision at current scale is finer than pixel size

precision grid is finer than pixel size

INTERPRETATION: Moving an object will sometimes under- or over-shoot the exact position you want.

What am I doing wrong?

If your scale is large enough, the pixels on the screen are larger than the precision grid spacing. Sometimes, your object gets close to where you want it but misses by a small amount equal to the small grid spacing. You aren't doing anything wrong, and several solutions exist.

  1. Temporarily reduce your scale until this message goes away, move the object where you want it and restore the scale.
  2. Select the object, open the Objects Inspector, enter the correct position value.
  3. Open the Grid banner, reduce the number of precision grid lines per unit until this message goes away, move the object.

I'm a math whiz, what's really going on?

The math for this is based on a screen resolution of 72 pixels per inch. Let's assume that you have your precision grid spacing set to 1/8". For a scale set to 9" = 1", each represented inch corresponds to eight pixels (72 divided by 9). So each pixel represents an eighth of an inch, exactly one precision grid spacing. However, for a scale of 1' = 1", each pixel represents 1/6" (12 divided by 72). Since 1/6" (a pixel width) is greater than 1/8" (the precision grid spacing), some precision grid lines won't be available for landing an object.

How many is "some?"

For a scale of 1' = 1", there are twelve represented inches in a real inch. Since each pixel is a sixth of an inch (from the paragraph above), six pixels equals one (represented) inch. The precision grid line spacing (1/8") tells us that each represented inch contains eight precision grid lines. Thus, two precision grid lines are missing from the action (eight minus six). So, in this case, "some" means "every third precision grid line." That can be quite frustrating.

WARNING: origin is out of range

origin is out of range

INTERPRETATION: The origin is so far away from the visible view that Design Intuition can't draw any grid lines.

This sounds terrible. Should I be concerned?

Surprisingly, no. This is another "honesty in reporting" message, explaining why the grid lines suddenly disappeared. Likely, you will never see this message.
